Woodson Row is located in the historic U Street area which, during the years of segregation, was the heart of the city's African-American community, where name entertainers, black-owned businesses, and grand movie theaters made U Street the place to be.

In keeping with the history of the neighborhood, Woodson Row was named after Dr. Carter G. Woodson Ð 1875-1950, one of AmericaÕs most noted historians and head of graduate faculty at Howard Univ. He opened the field of Black Studies to scholars, founded Negro History Week in 1926, which later became Black History Month. He was a prolific author of popular and scholarly books and President & Founder of Associated Publishers which produced many scholarly works on Black history/culture."
